COMPUTER OPERATIONS TECHNICIAN

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs moderately complex (journey-level) computer operations work. Work involves checking input to and output from computer equipment for correctness and accuracy. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Verifies source documents for appropriate coding, format, and content.

Reviews output for accuracy and form.

Reviews error listings to resolve problems.

Codes data items on source documents using a predetermined coding system.

Monitors computer systems for equipment failure or errors in performance.

Prepares reports and maintains records on control functions.

Inspects tapes for wear or damage.

Assists in locating sources of errors.

Assists in planning and scheduling of computer jobs and programs.

May assist in running backups according to schedule.

May prepare and submit production computer jobs for processing.

May classify and catalog reels of tape, disk packs, and documentation.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in computer operations work. Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of methods and equipment used in computer operations and data processing, of data control practices and procedures, and of existing applications.

Skill in the use of a computer and applicable software.

Ability to detect and correct errors in data, to maintain production and control jobs, to adapt production schedules to meet changing priorities, and to communicate effectively.
