TELECOMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST I

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs entry-level telecommunications work. Work involves assisting in the diagnosis and resolution of voice and/or data telecommunications problems and assisting in the installation and operation of telecommunications components. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Receives and responds to reports of trouble related to telecommunications and data equipment.

Uses electronic testing equipment to maintain high-quality diagnostic capability to solve telecommunications problems.

Assists in the installation and repair of office wiring infrastructure for telecommunications systems.

May serve as a liaison with vendors in solving problems with telecommunications components.

May assist in coordinating and producing reports supporting the operation and planning of telecommunications systems.

May assist in documenting telecommunications networks such as equipment configurations.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience with electronics or telecommunications installation and maintenance work. Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is generally preferred. Education and experience may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of telecommunications; of electronics; of engineering; or of data processing equipment, terminology, and procedures.

Skill in the use of telecommunications test equipment and of personal computers and applicable software; in determining causes of operating errors with telecommunications equipment; and in deciding what corrective solutions to implement.

Ability to test telecommunications equipment and to communicate effectively.
