Performs entry-level network work. Work involves assisting in the implementation, maintenance, and monitoring of local area networks, wide area networks, Internet or intranet systems, or a segment of a network system. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.


Performs procedures for backup, recovery, and archival of files stored on the network.

Performs network startup and shutdown procedures, and maintains control records. 

Confers with network users on how to solve system problems.

Monitors remote network locations and communicates with those locations to obtain clarification of problems and to identify solutions or corrective actions.

Assists with gathering data pertaining to customers’ needs and with using information to identify, predict, interpret, and evaluate system and network requirements.

Assists with the configurations, monitoring, and maintenance of email applications or virus protection software.

Assists in maintaining the local area network or wide area network, Internet or intranet, cable and hub installations, and inventories.

Assists in maintaining the network’s physical and logical structures and in installing and testing hardware and software.

Assists in performance tuning and capacity planning activities to enhance the performance of network resources and in maintaining network support software.

Assists in maintaining the operating system and security software utilized on the network, including the addition of new users to the network and establishment of rights and privileges.

Performs related work as assigned.


Experience and Education

Experience in local or wide area network work. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in computer science, management information systems, or a related field is generally preferred. Education and experience may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of network facilities and data processing techniques, of personal computer hardware and software, of network operating system and security software, and of performance monitoring and capacity management tools.

Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.

Ability to recognize, analyze, and resolve specific network problems; and to communicate effectively.
