PRINTING SERVICES TECHNICIAN I

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs routine (journey-level) printing services work. Work involves operating and maintaining reproduction and bindery equipment, testing and troubleshooting equipment, and scheduling and completing print orders and other duplication services. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Sets up, programs, and operates reproduction or bindery equipment.

Selects methods and procedures for handling job orders.

Maintains, adjusts, and makes repairs on reproduction and bindery equipment.

Maintains files of offset masters and negatives.

Maintains appropriate inventory levels.

Maintains records of work performed and materials expended.

Prepares printed material for storage or delivery.

Monitors operations of data communications network and computer console, troubleshoots equipment problems, and starts corrective action.

May operate cameras, take images from original forms, and transfer images to a mat to be reproduced on an offset press.

May order supplies.

May prepare chemicals for use in developing different types of film.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in operating bindery or reproduction equipment work. Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the types, varieties, and uses of papers, inks, chemicals, developers, and fixers used in the operation of duplicating and reproduction equipment; of the maintenance, operation, and adjustment of duplicating and bindery equipment; and of computer operations and communication networks.

Skill in the operation of binding, duplicating, and reproduction equipment; and in the use of a computer and applicable software.

Ability to adjust equipment for specific operations, to perform maintenance on equipment, and to communicate effectively.
