DIETETIC TECHNICIAN I

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs entry-level dietetic work.  Work involves providing dietetic and nutritional care and assisting with nutritional programs.  Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Obtains, documents, and assesses dietary histories to plan nutritional programs and log dietary restrictions.

Monitors the serving of modified diets to clients and notes information that will improve the nutritional care of clients.

Conducts food acceptance studies.

Maintains records and files on dietetic and/or nutritional care.

Assists in conducting dietetic training and providing nutritional counseling.

Assists in planning menus based on established guidelines.

Assists in developing methods of translating diet prescriptions to food preparation areas.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in dietetic work.  Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent, supplemented by coursework in dietary needs or nutrition, is generally preferred.  Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of nutrition, of food service operations, and of diet therapy techniques and procedures.

Skill in listening, and in documenting and monitoring dietary and nutritional needs.

Ability to assess nutritional status, to follow policies and procedures, and to communicate effectively.
