LABORATORY TECHNICIAN IV
Performs highly advanced (senior-level) laboratory work. Work involves conducting, analyzing, and reporting laboratory testing and research. May assign and/or supervise the work of others. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
Coordinates screening, serological, and chemical analysis tests.
Coordinates technical support activities in a laboratory.
Coordinates the training of laboratory technicians.
Receives and checks in microbiological and chemical samples and specimens.
Prepares and examines smears and stains.
Analyzes the results of tests and experiments to ensure compliance with specifications.
Analyzes test data and prepares reports.
Inoculates isolation media for pathogenic microorganisms and selects colonies for studies.
Monitors experiments and reports on unusual results and malfunctions.
Performs research computations and reports errors as appropriate.
Develops methods for improving the efficiency of laboratory equipment and procedures.
Designs forms and procedures for the collection and analysis of data.
Examines cells to locate abnormalities.
Consults with staff to determine a final diagnosis when abnormal cells are located.
May assign and/or supervise the work of others.
Performs related work as assigned.
GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Experience and Education
Experience in laboratory work. Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of laboratory techniques and procedures, of sterilization principles and techniques, and of microbiological and chemical procedures.
Skill in the operation and maintenance of laboratory and research equipment, in performing mathematical computations, and in the use of a computer and applicable software.
Ability to communicate effectively and to assign and/or supervise the work of others.
