MICROBIOLOGIST II

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs moderately complex (journey-level) microbiological work.  Work involves conducting microscopic and serological examinations; and isolating, purifying, and identifying pathogenic microorganisms.  May train others.  Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Conducts microbiological and serological examinations.

Conducts and interprets the results of laboratory procedures.

Collects and controls specimens for analysis.

Isolates and identifies bacteria, viruses, and parasites.

Prepares and standardizes diagnostic antisera, conjugates, and reagents for use in diagnostic procedures.

Processes orders and specifications for laboratory supplies.

Maintains records.

May train others.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in microbiological work.  Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in microbiology or a related field is generally preferred.  Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of microbiological principles and techniques.

Skill in the operation of microbiological laboratory equipment and in the use of a computer and applicable software.

Ability to conduct microbiological tests, to prepare diagnostic reagents, to communicate effectively, and to train others.
