MICROBIOLOGIST IV

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs advanced (senior-level) microbiological work.  Work involves planning and conducting microscopic and serological examinations and overseeing microbiological laboratory activities.  May assign and/or supervise the work of others.  Works under minimal supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Plans and oversees microbiological laboratory activities.

Oversees microbiological training, evaluation, and quality control programs.

Conducts microbiological and serological examinations.

Develops and evaluates policies and procedures, and facilitates their application.

Determines appropriate specifications for diagnostic reagents and equipment.

Prepares reports of program and examination results.

May consult with management regarding methods of examination, specimen assignments, and workflow.

May assist in directing the operations of a microbiological laboratory.

May assign and/or supervise the work of others.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in microbiological work.  Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in microbiology or a related field is generally preferred.  Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of microbiological principles and techniques.

Skill in the operation of microbiological laboratory equipment and in the use of a computer and applicable software.

Ability to conduct microbiological tests, to prepare diagnostic reagents, to develop procedures, to prepare reports, to communicate effectively, and to assign and/or supervise the work of others.
