MICROBIOLOGIST V

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs highly advanced (senior-level) microbiological work.  Work involves directing, planning, and coordinating microscopic and serological examinations and directing microbiological laboratory operations.  May plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others.  Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Directs, plans, and conducts microbiological and serological examinations.

Directs the operations of a microbiological laboratory.

Directs microbiological training, evaluation, and quality control programs.

Develops and evaluates policies and procedures, and facilitates their application.

Consults with management regarding methods of examination, specimen assignments, and work flow.

Determines appropriate specifications for diagnostic reagents and equipment.

Prepares reports of program and examination results.

May plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in microbiological work.  Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in microbiology or a related field is generally preferred.  Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of microbiological principles and techniques.

Skill in the operation of microbiological laboratory equipment and in the use of a computer and applicable software.

Ability to conduct microbiological tests; to prepare diagnostic reagents; to develop procedures; to prepare reports; to communicate effectively; and to plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others.
