REGISTERED THERAPIST ASSISTANT

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs entry-level habilitation or rehabilitation therapy assistance work. Work involves assisting a registered therapist in providing clients with therapeutic activities. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Instructs and assists clients in therapeutic activities.

Observes patients during treatment, records results, and reports observations to designated medical personnel.

Transports patients to and from treatment areas. 

Assists in planning, coordinating, and implementing therapeutic activity programs for individuals or groups of clients.

May perform therapeutic activities in the areas of speech and hearing, music, recreation, or education.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in therapy work. Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent, supplemented by courses in physical or occupational therapy, is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of therapy techniques and procedures.

Skill in the use of therapeutic equipment, materials, and tools.

Ability to plan and administer therapy programs, to prepare reports, and to communicate effectively.

Registration, Certification, or Licensure

May require registration in one of the therapy specialties.
