MEDICAL TECHNICIAN III

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs moderately complex (journey-level) patient care work. Work involves monitoring patient conditions, and providing assistance to medical staff in administering therapeutic programs. Works under general supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Monitors, observes, records, and reports changes in patients’ conditions.

Takes and records patients’ vital signs.

Sets up and prepares materials and equipment for therapeutic activities, and operates therapeutic equipment if needed.

Maintains patient records.

Maintains and evaluates supply levels.

Provides assistance to patients in rehabilitative therapies.

Provides assistance to medical staff in conducting patient examinations.

Responds to patient assistance calls.

Assists patients in bathing and performing other hygiene functions.

Assists in admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.

Assists in implementing planned patient care programs.

May assist in administering intravenous therapy, blood transfusion, and medication therapy.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in health care or patient care work. Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices of patient care, and of customer service principles and practices.

Skill in the operation of therapeutic equipment and other tools used in patient care, and in the use of a computer and applicable software.  

Ability to plan, assess, and provide patient care; and to communicate effectively.
