MEDICAL TECHNICIAN IV

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs complex (journey-level) patient care work. Work involves monitoring patient conditions, and providing assistance to medical staff in administering therapeutic programs. May train others. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Monitors, observes, records, and reports changes in patients’ conditions.

Monitors electrocardiograms for changes and initiates action as needed.

Monitors and assists in administering intravenous therapy, blood transfusions, and medication therapy.

Implements planned patient care programs.

Prepares and distributes materials for therapeutic activities.

Operates and maintains equipment used in therapy activities.

Instructs patients in rehabilitative therapies.

Maintains patient records.

Provides assistance to medical staff in conducting patient examinations.

Assists patients in bathing and performing other hygiene functions.

Assists in admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.

May administer medication.

May train others.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in health care or patient care work. Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices of patient care, and of customer service principles and practices.

Skill in the operation of therapeutic equipment and other tools used in patient care, and in the use of a computer and applicable software.  

Ability to plan, assess, and provide patient care; to communicate effectively; and to train others.
