MEDICAL TECHNICIAN V

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs advanced (senior-level) patient care work. Work involves monitoring patient conditions, and providing assistance to medical staff in planning and administering therapeutic programs. May supervise the work of others. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Monitors, observes, records, and reports changes in patients’ conditions.

Monitors and administers intravenous therapy, blood transfusions, and medication therapy.

Monitors electrocardiograms for changes and initiates action as needed.

Participates in the planning of patient care.

Coordinates the preparation and distribution of materials and equipment for therapeutic activities.

Operates and maintains equipment used in therapy activities.

Instructs and evaluates patient progress in rehabilitative therapies.

Maintains and reviews patient records.

Provides assistance to medical staff in performing specialized procedures.

Assists patients in bathing and performing other hygiene functions.

Assists in admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.

May administer medication.

May supervise the work of others.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in health care or patient care work. Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices of patient care, and of customer service principles and practices.

Skill in the operation of therapeutic equipment and other tools used in patient care, and in the use of a computer and applicable software.

Ability to plan, assess, and provide patient care; to assess patient needs; to communicate effectively; and to supervise the work of others.
