MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST V

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs highly advanced and/or supervisory (senior-level) clinical, cytological, or histological laboratory work. Work involves directing and conducting clinical laboratory tests and procedures, monitoring tests for accuracy, ensuring quality control, and preparing scientific reports based on specimen data. May plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Oversees the analysis of clinical samples using serological, fluorometric, colorimetric, immunofluorometric, electrophoretic, or other commonly used technology.

Oversees and evaluates clinical laboratory procedures in urinalysis, hematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, or serology.

Oversees the chemical analysis of body fluids, including blood, urine, and spinal fluid, to determine presence of normal and abnormal components.

Oversees or performs diagnostic procedures in cytology.

Oversees or performs parasitological identifications.

Develops procedures for processing specimens to ensure the accuracy of results, proper handling of specimens, and disposal of hazardous materials.

Formulates and evaluates methods of testing clinical, cytological, or histological specimens.

Performs and interprets low- or high-volume medical screening, confirmatory, or diagnostic tests.

Reviews and monitors training, evaluation, and quality control programs.

Reviews and verifies clinical and cytological laboratory reports for correctness and accuracy.

Receives, allocates, and assigns requests for clinical, cytological, or histological laboratory tests.

Monitors and evaluates clinical or cytological laboratory reports for correctness and accuracy.

Prepares and coordinates training, evaluation, and quality control programs.

Sets up, cleans, calibrates, and maintains laboratory equipment.

May plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in clinical, cytotechnological, or histological laboratory work. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in natural sciences or a related field is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of medical technology, cytotechnology, or histological concepts and practices; of clinical or histological laboratory and diagnostic cytology methods and procedures; and of quality assurance methodologies.

Skill in the use of laboratory equipment, including computerized instruments and laboratory information management systems.

Ability to conduct clinical and cytological laboratory tests and histological procedures; to determine deterioration or change in specimen and reagent quality; to communicate effectively; and to plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others.

Registration, Certification, or Licensure

May be registered as a medical technologist, cytotechnologist, histotechnician, or clinical laboratory scientist.

May be required to meet the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations as testing personnel.
