NURSE I

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs entry-level nursing work. Work involves providing for the assessment, care, and treatment of patients. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Administers medications, immunizations, and treatment as prescribed.

Conducts physical, developmental, and psychosocial assessments of patient health needs and implements appropriate action.

Prepares and maintains patient records, program reports, and patient assessments.

Instructs, counsels, and assists patients in meeting their health care needs.

Makes hospital rounds or home visits.

Assists in implementing case management service plans.

Assists in conducting community outreach and health education presentations.

May assist in quality assurance reviews.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in nursing work. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in nursing or from an accredited nursing program is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of nursing techniques and procedures.

Skill in the care and treatment of patients and in the operation of computers and applicable computer software.

Ability to provide patient care, to prepare and maintain records, and to communicate effectively.

Registration, Certification, or Licensure

Must be registered as a registered nurse by the State of Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.
