MEDICAL RESEARCH SPECIALIST

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Provides advanced (senior-level) medical research and analysis work.  Work involves conducting research and planning, conducting, and reporting on medical research projects. May plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others.  Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Conducts and plans medical research projects and studies, and determines methods and designs to be used for research and experiments.

Reviews technical medical research literature, interprets and analyzes findings, and reports results.

Researches, analyzes, and evaluates data associated with cutting-edge concepts, new initiatives, and innovative programs to determine their feasibility and applicability.

Synthesizes data and information to ensure that systems, processes, and models developed are internally consistent and achieve the intended results.

Develops and implements new policies, programs, and practices.

Establishes joint research initiatives with medical schools, universities, and research centers.

Follows strict safety procedures when handling materials to avoid contamination.

May plan and manage budgets for various medical research projects.

May publish reports or present information, research, and findings to committees, departments, and the public.

May plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in medical research work.  Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a master’s degree in science or a related field is generally preferred.  Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of medical research design, methods, principles, and techniques.

Skill in the use of statistical measurement techniques, in research design and implementation, in problem-solving methods and techniques, and in the use of a computer and applicable software.

Ability to work with abstract data, concepts, and requests; to prepare clear and concise reports; to communicate effectively; and to plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others.
