DENTIST I

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs complex (journey-level) dentistry work.  Work involves providing dental care and treatment for patients and advising and instructing patients regarding preventive care.  May supervise the work of others.  Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Oversees dental staff to ensure the application of proper dental techniques and methods.

Appraises patient dental needs and provides dental services to patients, including the application of fillings, extractions, x-rays, restorations, surgery, and dental prostheses; and diagnoses and treats oral lesions.

Advises and instructs patients regarding preventive dental care, the causes and treatment of dental problems, and oral health care services.

Implements dental health education programs.

Maintains patient records of dental services.

May assist in planning, administering, and monitoring the departmental budget.

May supervise the work of others.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in dentistry work.  Graduation from an accredited college of dentistry with a doctor of dentistry degree. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices of preventive and corrective dentistry, of oral hygiene, and of clinical dentistry requirements.

Skill in the use of dental tools and equipment and in the operation of computers and applicable computer software.

Ability to provide patient dental care, to diagnose patient dental care needs, to prepare and maintain records, to communicate effectively, and to supervise the work of others.

Registration, Certification, or Licensure

Must be licensed as a dentist by the State of Texas.
