DENTIST II

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs advanced (senior-level) dentistry work.  Work involves planning and directing dental programs and activities, overseeing and providing for the dental care and treatment of patients, and advising and instructing patients regarding preventive care.  May assign and/or supervise the work of others.  Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Oversees dental staff to ensure the application of proper dental techniques and methods.

Plans and directs dental programs and activities and plans departmental objectives.

Appraises patient dental needs and provides dental services to patients, including the application of fillings, extractions, x-rays, restorations, surgery, and dental prostheses; and diagnoses and treats oral lesions. 

Advises and instructs patients regarding preventive dental care, the causes and treatment of dental problems, and oral health care services.

Participates in planning, administering, and monitoring the departmental budget.

Reviews rules and standards and initiates or recommends changes in departmental policies and procedures.

Provides consultation and technical assistance to dental personnel.

Coordinates the maintenance of patient records of dental services.

May assign and/or supervise the work of others.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in dentistry work.  Graduation from an accredited college of dentistry with a doctor of dentistry degree. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices of preventive and corrective dentistry, of oral hygiene, and of clinical dentistry requirements.

Skill in the use of dental tools and equipment and in the operation of computers and applicable computer software.

Ability to provide patient dental care, to diagnose patient dental care needs, to follow standards and rules, to develop and implement policies and procedures, to prepare and maintain records, to prepare budgets, to communicate effectively, and to assign and/or supervise the work of others.

Registration, Certification, or Licensure

Must be licensed as a dentist by the State of Texas.
