AGRICULTURE SPECIALIST III

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs complex (journey-level) agricultural work. Work involves producing farm, beef, pork, poultry, and dairy products and monitoring the activities of offenders. May train others. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Oversees the general care of beef and dairy herds, the operation of feed lots, the care of poultry flocks, and the production of row and garden crops.

Oversees the operation of farming machinery.

Coordinates the maintenance and repair of equipment, building, and storage facilities.

Maintains records and reports.

Responds to emergency situations.

Searches for escaped offenders, transports offenders, and performs correctional and custodial support functions as needed.

May provide guidance on field preparation, planting, cultivating, irrigating, fertilizer and insecticide application, and harvesting.

May provide guidance on the care, feeding, breeding, and preventive medical treatment of livestock and poultry.

May train others.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in agricultural work. Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of farming, ranching, dairy, poultry, and feed lot operations and procedures; of soil preparation and conservation techniques; of crop planting, fertilizing, cultivating, harvesting, and storing methods and procedures; and of livestock and poultry management, breeding, and feeding practices.

Skill in the operation and maintenance of agricultural equipment.

Ability to maintain records and reports, to communicate effectively, and to train others.
