State Park Police Officer Trainee (Cadet)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Attends an agency-approved Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) academy and either the Texas Parks and Wildlife State Park Law Enforcement Academy or Game Warden Training Academy. Work involves receiving instruction on applicable laws, statutes, and regulations and developing the skills required to be a commissioned State Park Police Officer. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Maintains satisfactory performance level while receiving and demonstrating knowledge in enforcement of applicable Texas Parks and Wildlife Code, State Park Rules and Regulations, Texas Penal Code, and other relevant Texas statutes and regulations.

Maintains satisfactory performance level while receiving and demonstrating knowledge and skill in physical conditioning and basic defensive tactics.

Maintains satisfactory performance level while receiving and demonstrating knowledge and skill in responding to inquiries and presenting educational programs to the public regarding applicable statutes, regulations, and agency programs.

Maintains satisfactory performance level while receiving and demonstrating knowledge and skill in preparing and submitting reports required by department procedures and by other agencies and courts.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Must be at least 21 years of age. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in criminal justice, corrections, criminology, police science, natural resources, or a related field is generally preferred. 

Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to interpret state and federal statutes and regulations pertaining to wildlife and natural resource enforcement; to interpret provisions of the Texas Penal Code and Texas Code of Criminal Procedure; to use and care for firearms, radio equipment, and other law enforcement equipment; to operate law enforcement vehicles and vessels; and to communicate effectively.

Registration, Certification, or Licensure

Must possess a valid driver’s license.
