ARCHEOLOGIST II

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs highly complex (senior-level) archeological, research, and cultural resource management work. Work involves the preservation, management, and research of land and underwater archeological sites. May supervise the work of others. Works under limited supervision, with considerable latitude for use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Coordinates archeological investigations, research, preservation or stabilization programs, and field and laboratory experiments and analysis.

Coordinates and participates in archeological surveys, tests, and excavation projects.

Prepares and edits materials for archeological publications, files, reports, and records.

Prepares contracts for professional services.

Monitors and inspects archeological investigations, testing programs, or preservation and stabilization projects.

Maintains an inventory of archeological sites.

May coordinate research activities and cultural resource management.

May review plans for construction projects that require archeological resource protection.

May develop policies and procedures.

May supervise the work of others.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in archeological work. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in anthropology, archeology, history, or a related field is generally preferred.  Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of preservation techniques, field investigations, and laboratory procedures and analysis.

Skill in the use of a computer and applicable software.

Ability to plan and organize research projects and fieldwork, to communicate effectively, and to supervise the work of others.

Registration, Certification, or Licensure

May require registration, certification, or licensure in a specialty area.
