Performs advanced (senior-level) grounds and building maintenance work. Work involves overseeing the caring for and maintenance of the appearance of grounds and gardens and the maintenance of and repair of groundskeeping tools, supplies, and equipment. May train, lead, assign, and/or prioritize the work of others. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.


Oversees and/or performs groundskeeping work, such as mowing and trimming grass and trimming, fertilizing, watering, removing, and planting trees and shrubs.

Oversees and/or performs the removal of dirt, rubbish, and refuse from grounds.

Oversees and/or performs repair and preventive maintenance work on fountains, planters, parking lots, roads, fences, and sidewalks.

Oversees and/or performs the mixing, spraying, or spreading of fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides onto grass, shrubs, and trees, using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders.

Oversees and/or performs landscaping work.

Operates powered equipment such as mowers, tractors, chain saws, electric clippers, sod cutters, and pruning shears.

Performs quality assurance checks on work in progress and/or completed.

Drives trucks and hauls materials, supplies, dirt, and office furniture.

Installs, maintains, and performs preventive maintenance on sprinkler systems.

May train, lead, assign, and/or prioritize the work of others.

Performs related work as assigned.


Experience and Education

Experience in groundskeeping work. Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the planting and care of trees, shrubbery, flowers, and grass; of pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides; and of hand and power tools and equipment.

Skill in the use of groundskeeping hand tools and equipment, in the operation of motorized and gas-operated equipment, and in the maintenance and repair of sidewalks and parking lots.

Ability to maintain and care for hand and power tools and equipment; to detect diseases in plants and grasses; and to train, lead, assign, and/or prioritize the work of others.

Registration, Certification, or Licensure

May require a valid driver's license.
