BARBER/COSMETOLOGIST

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs moderately complex (journey-level) barber or cosmetology work. Work involves cutting, shampooing, and styling hair; maintaining the cleanliness of work areas and equipment; maintaining records of work performed; and requisitioning equipment and supplies. May provide guidance and instruction to others. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Cuts, shampoos, combs, and styles hair; gives permanent waves; applies color rinse.

Shaves clients, trims beards and mustaches, manicures nails, arches eyebrows, gives scalp treatments, and applies facials.

Sorts and inventories soiled linens for laundry and counts and stores clean linens.

Schedules appointments, maintains records of work performed, and inventories equipment and supplies.

Cleans and sterilizes scissors, combs, clippers, and other instruments.

Cleans work stations and sweeps floors.

Requisitions equipment and supplies and performs repair and maintenance work on tools and equipment.

May provide guidance and instruction to others.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in barber or cosmetology work. Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent supplemented by courses in cosmetology is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of hair types and styles and of barbering or cosmetology methods and practices.

Skill in the use of barbering or cosmetology techniques, tools, and equipment.

Ability to provide guidance and instruction to others.

Registration, Certification, or Licensure

Must be licensed as a class A barber or as a cosmetologist by the Department of Licensing and Regulation.
