MACHINIST I

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs moderately complex (journey-level) machinist work. Work involves operating machines and tools in repairing, rebuilding, and constructing mechanical equipment.  May train others.  Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Manufactures and repairs various parts and equipment.

Sets up, adjusts, and operates basic machine tools.

Calculates dimensions for manufactured parts and equipment.

Selects the appropriate tools, machines, and materials.

Constructs jigs for use in machines.

Assists in designing and building special equipment.

May operate welding equipment.

May train others.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in operating machine shop equipment. Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of machine shop methods and materials used to manufacture and repair mechanical equipment.

Ability to work from blueprints and drawings, to communicate effectively, and to train others.
