AIRCRAFT MECHANIC III

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs highly advanced and/or supervisory (senior-level) inspection, diagnostic, and repair work on fixed-wing or rotary aircraft. Work involves setting standards of performance and devising work practices and procedures in accordance with established policies. May plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others. Works under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Oversees and/or coordinates work to ensure the availability of aircraft and efficient use of mechanics’ time and equipment.

Coordinates the inspection, diagnoses, and repairs of aircraft engines, components, and systems.

Inspects completed work to ensure that maintenance and inspections meet applicable standards and regulations and that aircraft are ready for operation.

Repairs and replaces pumps, engines, propellers, instruments, landing gear, airframe, control surfaces, and fuel systems.

Reviews and approves aircraft maintenance log entries, reports, and other records of work performed in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration and agency standards.

Provides assistance to other mechanics in maintenance or repair procedures.

Determines workload and manpower requirements for specific jobs and classes of jobs.

Plans and develops policies, procedures, and goals in the areas of maintenance programs, quality control, and safety.

May plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others.

Performs related work as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES

Experience and Education

Experience in aircraft inspection, maintenance, and repair work. Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent, supplemented by courses in aircraft maintenance and repair, is generally preferred. Experience and education may be substituted for one another.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of aircraft inspection, maintenance, and repair, and of applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes.

Skill in determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed; in troubleshooting causes of equipment malfunctions; in the use of applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade; and in identifying complex problems and solutions.

Ability to interpret governmental regulations and manufacturers’ technical advice and data; to review and approve aircraft maintenance log entries, reports, and other records of work performed; to communicate effectively; and to plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others.

Registration, Certification, or Licensure

Requires a current Federal Aviation Administration Airframe and Power Plant Mechanic’s license.
